It keeps turning,
at its own pace.
The nora is an Algarvian water wheel. Its buckets go down into the well, take up fresh water, rise to the top and pour it into the channel that irrigates the farm. Once, it was what kept alive the citrus trees.
Today it turns more slowly — one revolution every ninety seconds — and the avocados and the olives no longer depend on it to grow. But the wheel keeps turning, at the pace of something that has watched decades pass and is still in no hurry.
